Intersecting Times is the programme developed by the associative tissue of Guimarães, which mission is to value “best practices, representations, expressions, knowledge and competences of the local community, reinforcing its cultural and social role” in the city’s dynamics.
This project derives on the one hand, from the awareness of the contribution these movements have paid to drawing the cultural and artistic space in the municipality, and on the other hand the need to improve knowledge and qualify different manifestations of folklore and popular culture. The coordination of this programme is in charge of a consortium by three local associations: the Círculo de Arte e Recreio; the Associação Cultural Recreativa Convívio; and the Associação de Etnografia e Folclore de Guimarães, which includes 25 musical and dance groups.
The Intersecting Times – Associative Programme was inspired in the sociological thesis by Augusto Santos Silva, published in the 90’s, which studied the local community of São Torcato as the intersection of the symbolic rural and industrial time. In a period dominated by the emergence of the creative industries, cultural management becomes a necessary instrument in a cultural economy.
Associations and popular culture are significant identifying marks for Guimarães and are important to the involvement of the population in the social dynamics of the city and municipality. This is a multidisciplinary project of cultural management , new museology and comprises concepts and contents of history, anthropology, sociology, the arts, geography, urban planning, communication, organisation and management and economics.
The programme results from an empiric research of artistic and cultural manifestation. Dances, traditional singing, arts and crafts, the celebration of the natural cycles, amateur theatre, poetry, the artistic improvement of associative spaces and the open debate, are the base for a future built upon the synergies and the sharing of resources among the local associations.
